It was only 9 minutes...and yet it was the hardest workout I had ever done in my life!

I’d been out on a patrol for 3 days, tired, dirty, exhausted and ready to hit the sack…
 
As we pulled into the American base, I caught a glimpse of 3 marines throwing themselves around on the desert floor... 
 
I was passing by that way to get to my tent, so thought I’d do a little more investigating on the way through…
 
As I approached I saw what I can only describe as 2 wooden uprights, barely holding themselves up, sticking out the desert floor with a rusty bar through the top of them as the pull-up bar... 
 
On the deck were 6 beaten up 8 x 4 wooden boards with a makeshift kettlebell, a barbell and some old weights that looked as if they had been left by the Russians in 1979!
 
The marines were dripping from head to toe in sweat, going hard at whatever crazy workout it was they were doing…
 
When they paused to take a breath I asked them... “what are you guys doing?”
 
“Dude, this is CrossFit!” 
 
This meant nothing to me but I wanted in!
 
Later that day, after dinner I met the marines back at the “gym” where I saw them earlier that day…
 
“You ready for this?”
 
I thought I was!
 
They gave me the count down...3-2-1-GO! With that I leapt into action and went at what looked to be an easy workout!
 
Who would have thought 21-15-9 reps of pullups and thrusters would be so tough!
 
For those in the know, this is a benchmark workout in the CrossFit world that has taken down many a man (and woman) since its creation in 2007! If you haven’t done so already, give it a go…
 
Anyway...9 minutes later and I found myself on all fours throwing up in a puddle of my sweat that was dripping from my forehead!
 
My heart was beating so hard I though my rib cage was going to break and my lungs were trying to take in as much air as possible in the humid Afghan climate!
 
When I stood up I felt like i'd been hit by a bus!
 
The funny thing was that as bad as it hurt, I felt awesome! I had never felt like that after a workout before...especially with only 9 minutes of work!
 
(To my despair I later found out that the marines had completed the same workout in less than 3 minutes!)
 
This is where my love for this style of training started, that hot sweaty day in Afghanistan on 6- 8x4 wooden boards, a wobbly pull-up bar and a rusty beaten up old barbell!
 
And that got me thinking… “Why, with all the fancy equipment people have in gyms these days can't they get a workout like this?”
